Crocodile spotted in Canadian Pond, Evades Capture

Hamilton's elusive gator has gone viral. People came out in droves, carrying their children and pulling along their dogs, cameras and binoculars for a possible peek at the crocodilian reptile that is likely an abandoned pet. Some were scared, but most were just fascinated. Tuesday's search concluded Confederation Park's alligator or crocodile was no longer in the pond, but that hasn't stopped tongues from wagging and stories from exploding on the Internet. Given the cool water temperatures, the gator could not have gone far. The Confederation Park pond leads into the Red Hill Creek, which leads into the Windermere Basin and eventually Lake Ontario. Loyst, curator of the Indian River Reptile Zoo near Peterborough, was called in to find the crocodilian species after local birder Tom Badeau discovered the reptile and sent a photo to the authority Monday. The distant photo shows what looks like a small gator poking its head out of the water. Despite no sightings Tuesday, Loyst said he is quite sure based on the photo and a far-away sighting Monday it is one of 23 crocodile or alligator species. But he and authority searchers were satisfied after Tuesday nights effort it is no longer in the area. No further searches are planned unless there are new sightings. Abandoned pets aren't unusual, but Collins said a croc or gator dumped in an urban area is almost unbelievable. It's not lost on many that the reports come on the heels of a Tiger-Cats guerrilla marketing campaign that ...

The Andromeda Galaxy

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com "The Andromeda Galaxy" with Jane Houston Jones at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- The Andromeda Galaxy (also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224) is a spiral galaxy approximately 2500000 light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It is the nearest spiral galaxy to our own, the Milky Way. As it is visible as a faint smudge on a moonless night, it is one of the farthest objects visible to the naked eye, and can be seen even from urban areas with binoculars. It is named after the princess Andromeda (Greek: Ανδρομέδη Andromédē) in Greek mythology. Andromeda is the largest galaxy of the Local Group, which consists of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, the Triangulum Galaxy, and about 30 other smaller galaxies. Although the largest, Andromeda may not be the most massive, as recent findings suggest that the Milky Way contains more dark matter and may be the most massive in the grouping. The 2006 observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope revealed that M31 contains one trillion stars, several times more than the number of stars in our own galaxy, which is estimated to be c. 200-400 billion. While the 2006 estimates put the mass of the Milky Way to be ~80% of the mass of Andromeda, which is estimated to be 7.1 × 1011 solar masses, a 2009 study concluded that Andromeda and the Milky ...
